Curriculum

Steven Markowitz MD DrPH, an occupational medicine physician, internist, and epidemiologist, directs the Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment at the City University of New York. He is Adjunct Professor of Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was educated at Yale University and Columbia University and trained in internal medicine and in occupational medicine under Dr. Irving Selikoff at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Markowitz currently directs the largest screening program for the early detection of occupational lung cancer in the country.

Dr. Markowitz has published research on asbestosis, asbestos-related ling cancer and malignant mesothelioma. He is the Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Industrial Medicine and Associate Editor of a major textbook, Environmental and Occupational Medicine.  He has served on numerous Federal panels, including World Trade Center Scientific and Technical Advisory Board of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Advisory Board on Toxic Substances and Worker Health of the U.S. Department of Labor.
